Choke (08 Gregg C+): Terrific performances can't fix the fact that I've already almost entirely forgotten that I even saw this movie.
Sweet Sweetback &c (71 Van Peebles C): Trying to come up w/ some reading where this isn't offensively self-loving and sexist. Nope, nothing.
I passed on AFTERSCHOOL at Cannes because it sounded like so much empty provocation. Oopsie, I guess.
And the Onion comes out with maybe the best, most moving DFW obit? http://tinyurl.com/4unzu8
@paperlung And I need to see it period. Fuck not being a legit journalist in my opinion.
RIP DFW. Not even gonna try to think of anything to say. Tragic.
@opalfilms Tell me about it. These Coen guys are pretty good with actors, huh?
Happy-Go-Lucky (08 Leigh B): A bit too overbearing and deterministic, esp. for Leigh, but Hawkins is miraculous. Perf of the year so far.
Burn After Reading (08 Coens B+): Hilarious, and much smarter than it's gotten credit for. Pitt is genius. I need to it see again.
Youth Without Youth (07 Coppola C+): Not without it's batshit charms, but jesus what a mess.
Forgiveness (06 Aloni C): Sorry dude, but shallow psychoanalysis and half-assed Lynchian nonsense don't add a lot to the Palestine debate.
@AndrewDignan I get hives just thinking about what Jamie Foxx's performance in that movie is going to be like.
The Tree of Life (08 Volterra D-): If I have to watch one more uninteresting, incompetent documentary for Slant I am going to lose it.
@Kza RED BALLOON is my favorite movie of the year so far. Also everything everybody else said.
It just isn't an election until I'm feeling that mix of hatred and disgust toward the Republicans. So thanks, smug female version of Dubya!
Wait, Palin is qualified for president because Alaska is close to Russia? What the fuck? Is anyone actually stupid enough to believe that?
Hamlet 2 (08 Fleming B): Like a lot of the 08 comedies: Really damn sloppy, but funny enough that I don't care. Coogan is fucking brilliant.
October (28 Eisenstein): Basically the same 15 minutes set on infinite repeat. Brilliant in moments, tedious as a whole.
Within Our Gates (20 Micheaux): Proof that "important" doesn't always equal "good," although tech constraints were obviously a problem.
I've been checking my phone like every 30 minutes for the VP text. Barack Obama is a blue-balling asshole in my opinion.
